7th Sea - A Dream in Darkness is about a place where it all went terribly, horribly wrong.  The country of Montaigne once was rich and gleaming, its courts and coutiers shining like jewels and its Empereur the most powerful man in the world.  But beneath it all there was corruption.  The peasants were being taxed into starvation while the nobles lived in an orgy of conspicuous waste.  Doubters and reformers were silenced.  Two wars were being fought, one to retaliate against a Church-backed invasion, another simply to dispose of an annoyingly-popular general.  It was a grand palace built on a teetering foundation.

It couldn't last.

It didn't last.

One day it all came toppling down.  Great was the fall, and hard was the crash, so hard that nearly a quarter-century later the world is still broken.  Montaigne is still a wound in the chest of mankind, the bleeding may have slowed but the healing has not yet come.  The infection that is the Nightmare has spread and could well overwhelm the whole world if not stopped.

But there is still hope.  In one forgotten corner of Montaigne, the seeds of healing have been sown.  Shielded from the Nightmare by the enigmatic power of the Dreaming, a new generation of heroes has been born and will soon take up sword and courage in the service of peace and justice.
